Vic’s Espresso/Peerless 2009 Rider Photo and Profile Steve Worley DOB: July 19, 1951 Years Racing: 25 Hometown: Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin Occupation: Oceanographer/Meteorologist and Data Manager at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) When a guy starts talking about his hobbies of fly-fishing, Nordic skiing, living in the tropics, and drinking wine, you would think this man was your average friendly guy who moved from Wisconsin to Colorado in the 1980’s. But when he mentions his favorite drink at Vic’s is a triple shot medium Americano, you start getting the idea that this man is not your average guy. This man is a bike racer - a National Track Points Race ('01) Champion and Individual Pursuit ('07) Champion. Steve began racing bikes while living in Texas when a rock-climbing fall resulted in a broken ankle and changed his focus away from triathlons. He realized through his triathlon racing that he was relatively strong on the bike. Hundreds of cycling races later, Steve is proud, in his words, “to be part of the best Masters racing team.” Steve trains well year round, enduring LT profile testing at Boulder Center for Sports Medicine but “not VO2max,” he said. He enjoys training rides up St. Vrain Road and the old Valley Roads out of Lyons. Indoors Steve brings out the iPod Mini with play lists that motivate him for the daily workout plan: “There are Led Zeppelin days!” he says. Outside Steve pulls out his specialized S-works transition bike and competes in Individual and Team Time Trials. Having road raced for years, he races the occasional Hill Climb but prefers to target Crits and Track events. He has traveled extensively for work and pleasure. If not racing Steve said he would be, “cycle touring the famous roads in France, Italy, and Spain.” Steve Worley’s Cycling Palmares: 2008
