Years Racing: 22
Hometown: Westminster, Colorado
Occupation: Sales
Nickname: Spanky

Let’s begin by reading Mike’s response to what his favorite test at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine was: “None; every one of the tests hurt.” Now let’s consider that Mike was previously a competitive marathon runner, so he should know about pain. Mike said, “I used to be a long distance runner. I ran Boston, Chicago and Marine Corp marathons, just to name a few, until the mid 80"s when I started to have foot problems. I entered a few bike races and fell in love with the sport almost instantly.” Today Mike not only bike races but contributes to our team goals by setting and communicating our weekly team training rides.

Mike says his choice of Specialized gear is “My S-Works Bike - best bike I have ever ridden.” He is one of the rare riders who actually enjoys indoor training. Because he travels during the week, Mike brings his Compu-trainer with him, and is usually out of bed by 5:00 AM and on the bike by 5:15 AM after consuming a quick Power Bar. Using his iPod, a good movie, or his Compu-trainer to train, Mike admits he likes the Seven Falls TT course on the Compu-trainer. “I ride for about an hour, on the hill sections. I usually can smell my back tire burning, along with my legs burning. I guess it's my favorite training ride, since I ride it often, or maybe I enjoy the pain,” he said. (Pain seems to be a reoccurring theme.)

With one of the most complex coffee choices within the team, Mike’s Vic’s drink is a Decaf Mocha Latte, no whip, non-fat. In the last few years Mike has come to enjoy a good glass of wine, and shares that if he were not bike racing these days he would probably be wine tasting and visiting vineyards.

Mike’s life is pretty full; he is a husband, father and grandfather. He said, “Between traveling for my job, riding and racing, I don't have time for anything else.” An all-rounder, Mike made time very recently to participate in 2008 National Championships – 6th TT, 10th Criterium, and 14th Road Race; and 2007 National Championships - 7th TT, 6th Criterium, and 14th Road Race.
