Vic’s Espresso/Peerless 2009 Rider Photo and Profile

Len Pettyjohn

DOB: August 31, 1941
Years Racing: 14
Hometown: Boulder, CO
Occupation: Event Organizer - Team Manager

Len is forever the coach and organizer. He freely educates, plans race strategy, teaches race tactics and skills, analyzes training numbers, coordinates gear, offers support and shares his immense expertise with the Vic’s Espresso team. All of this is immeasurable. To Len, riding with friends offers a fundamental need to address his competitive side. He said he also craves, “the attraction of the tactical and strategic aspects of bike racing.” Len not only encourages the team to train well, he manages the time to train well himself and lists his favorite ride in the Boulder area (on his Specialized Tarmac SL2), as “north from Boulder, up South St. Vrain Canyon, through Raymond to Peak to Peak and Ward; descend Left Hand Canyon to Boulder.”

If Len weren’t spending all his time coaching everyone else to be better riders, he said he would be, “riding my bicycle with a few friends on a quiet mountain road.” If you want to buy Len a drink at Vic’s Espresso (and you should!) make his a Cappuccino. Len’s personal Master’s racing honors include Colorado State Champion, 4th at National Championships, and five times Colorado BAR. In his spare time he likes skiing, snowboarding, surfing, diving and motor sports (track and drag racing).

When it comes to training, Len is a coach who practices what he preaches. He trains indoors and out. Inside he said he overcomes boredom by “existing in my private fantasy world, watching TV, and using a Compu-Trainer.” Len also knows well about performance testing and says his test of choice at BCSM would be a “hard choice among blood donations to Paul K. for LT, completely burning my legs and lungs with VO2 Max, or the longest 30 seconds in the world with a Wingate test. The least agony would have to be the LT Profile.”
