Vic’s Espresso/Peerless 2009 Rider Photo and Profile

Karen Rakestraw

DOB: July 25, 1960
Years Racing: 1
Hometown: Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
Occupation: website development
Nickname: k-dog, krake, K-Pow

After 9 years of rock climbing and backcountry skiing, and a lifetime of about every other sport out there – the injuries were racking up and Karen was looking for a kinder, gentler sport. After a life-changing trip to the French Pyrenees with her brother and sister-in-law in 2001, where she watched the Tour de France roadside, Karen was inspired to give road cycling a try. A subsequent trip to see (now teammate) Andy Pruitt at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine made road cycling a possibility.

Karen endures Power Max classes in winter but far prefers to be outdoors in the high mountains riding with 2 to 3 other cyclists, blasting the Shuffle snapped to her rear pocket. She enjoys riding the Copper Triangle in Summit County, CO and the countryside near Solvang, CA. Her favorite ride is the route from Sault, France up to the summit of Mount Ventoux. Having climbed over 25 of the major mountain passes in France (several more than once) by bike, she has also rock climbed El Capitan and many other big climbs by hand and foot.

Believing once might be enough after experiencing the Lactate Threshold and VO2max tests at Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, she much prefers to hang out in front of Vic’s in her Specialized Miura Optics Adaptalite sunglasses sipping a medium Cafe Latte – “whole milk please!” In her first year of racing Karen is proud to be part of the new Vic’s women’s TT team and loves riding her Specialized Transition Pro.

Karen enjoys watching or reading about pro cycling online and being a fan at major races in Europe and the USA. Her other interests include travel, writing, guitar and singing, hiking, skiing, sea kayaking, gardening, yoga, swimming, animals, and visiting her family near the southern California beaches she still calls home.

Karen contributes to the team blog and is very interested in supporting her teammates at local races. She also contributed along with friend and teammate Brad Wallace to create this website.
