Fred Matheny

DOB: September 16, 1945
Years Racing: 33
Hometown: Montrose, CO
Occupation: Retired teacher; writer/editor

In 1970 Fred and his wife moved to Montrose, CO from the Cleveland area where they were teachers (and Fred was an Ohio football player). Both were interested in living in the mountains where they could backpack, climb and back country ski. Fred began bike racing in 1976. Racing in the early years against current teammates Lawrence Bosch and Marc Bekoff, Fred has won two Colorado TT championships (1997, 2003) and a Bronze medal at Masters National TT (2000). Cycling has now become Fred’s main focus.
Fred is author of 9 or more books on cycling and training. He coauthored one of those books with teammate and long time friend Andy Pruitt. In 2001, after working together with Ed Pavelka at Velo News and later Bicycling Magazine, Fred and Ed founded RoadBikeRider.com at http://www.roadbikerider.com/. RBR now has over 62,000 subscribers. To subscribe to Fred’s free weekly online RoadBikeRider Newsletter, go to http://www.roadbikerider.com/newsletter.php.
Fred has coached at cycling camps for years, including the Carpenter-Phinney camps, Dirt Camp (a mountain bike instructional camp), and Lon Haldeman's camps in Arizona and Wisconsin. He has also given cycling talks at events like Ride the Rockies, El Tour de Tucson, The Hotter'n Hell Hundred, and The Skinny Tire Festival. Fred’s interests include hiking, snowshoeing, backpacking, reading, history, and current affairs. He also likes riding his Specialized Roubaix bike. Fred’s favorite training ride in the Montrose area is from Montrose to Black Canyon National Park.
Fred’s favorite test at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine is Lactate Threshold testing. His favorite Vic’s Espresso drink is a Decaf Americano. And the superhero Fred would choose to be for a week is “Achilles, for his combination of courage, cunning and pragmatism,” he said. To Fred there is no point in trying to avoid the boredom of training inside in the winter. He said, “It is part of the experience, but Pro race videos, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones help.”
