Vic’s Espresso/Peerless 2009 Rider Photo and Profile

Bill Simmons

DOB: April 6, 1953
Years Racing: 21
Hometown: Columbia, Missouri
Occupation: Vocational Rehabilitation Manager - Six State District - U.S. Dept of Labor

Recovery from a life-threatening health problem in 1987 led Bill to racing. He was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue in his 30's. The disease caused severe malnutrition for years, but he learned full recovery was possible only after his abstinence from the protein gluten in all foods. Bill said his recovery led to “a new lease on life and endurance sports.” He has taken that enthusiasm to the roads and says that when it comes to riding, “my favorite is the Coal Creek Canyon ride in the Rocky Mountains up to Wunderview, an old mining town taken over by hippies in the 60's. Now we're all envious of the view from their front porches and flower-power vans.” He likes to follow long rides with a Vic’s house coffee with a huge shot of chocolate syrup.

When Bill was asked what his favorite test at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine was, his answer reveals why he is so fun to ride a bike with: “I like testing the hot tea in their hospitality waiting room while I read all the signed "thank you" posters from world class athletes. The lactate threshold test is second.” Follow that with his answer to who is your favorite super hero: “Superman, because he has been around for 55 years, so clearly the guy takes care of himself. Didn't I see him at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine once?” He’s not just funny, he’s fast, with 6 state championships from Utah and Colorado, and a National Criterium Podium placing.

Bill will tell you his only real hobby is his family, but he also enjoys riding the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands National Park, ”slowly, and savoring all 12 hours.” Bill claims that “no one single item has ever caused such a jump in my riding ability as my Specialized Stumpjumper 29 Mountain bike, with 29" wheels. It's just incredible. I've told everybody I ride with that it's me, so this has to be our secret.” Still funny, still fast, that’s Bill.
